Awesome avocado August has arrived with a variety of avocados at the market this week.
Did you know that avocado fruit matures but does not ripen on the tree, so farmers can essentially store the fruit on the tree and control the yield of their harvest. However in years when yields are low and this year they are generally low in the northern rivers then spreading the picking season across many months doesn’t work. Let’s enjoy our locally grown avos while we can.
This week we are thrilled that Doug and Blanche at Narbey’s Best Avocados are back this week with their new season Hass. This is the one that changes skin colour as it ripens – green to purple black and tends to have a longer season. If we are really lucky Doug has enough to keep picking for a few more months.
Will at Everest Farm has been picking avocados from the very back of his property so this is supplementing the choices at the market right now and Jumping Red Ant has early season Reed avocados
We have an abundance of silver beet at our organic farm stalls: Summit Organic, Sylva Lining and Bio Organic Farm and masses of coriander too – this is also at The Gourmet Salad Hut.
Here is a recipe for coriander pesto or if you prefer Rob at Spice Palace has it already made for you and Abby at The Gourmet Salad Hut has coriander pesto and sometimes a coriander and basil pesto mix.
Summit Organics and Everest Farm have deliciously sweet bunches of carrots that you have to taste to believe!. Successfully growing carrots is in this area is an art that Rod Bruin shared with us during Summit Organics farm tour on Saturday.
Rainbow Fruit Flats has some strawberries but only for the early birds. As the season progresses quantities will be increasing.
