It’s Ok To Play With Your Food

With NSW school holidays about to commence and knowing from experience that school holidays and hungry, bored children don’t mix, the Farmers Market is offering you a fun competition that’s healthy and a learning experience for everyone.

Create a Living Creature Competition
The Create a Living Creature competition is in two categories – children 8 years and under, and children from 9 to 12 years. The Regent Theatre is kindly providing a family pass for the prize winner in each age group. The idea is to choose a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and create a living creature. The example in the photo has used fresh oranges, blueberries, a Lebanese cucumber. But with current variety of local produce available at the
markets now you could use carrots, beetroot, strawberries, bulbs of fennel, broccoli, cauliflower, snow peas, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and much more. With a little imagination children could make a lady beetle using cherry tomatoes halved or with plenty of citrus and apples in supply what about a fruit bird! Encourage your children to use their favourite healthy foods to create a winning entry and be in the running to see Monsters University or The Odd Life of Timothy Green at the Regent Theatre during the July school holidays. Cut the produce into shapes of various sizes and give each child a selection of them and an empty plate. The challenge is for them to create a delicious healthy snack to eat that’s also fun to look at.

Bring this creation to the Caldera Farmers Market on Wednesday 3rd July for judging at 10.00am. When you arrive at the market there will be an entry form to complete and display with each entry. The winners wil announced before the market finishes at 11.00am. We’d also love to see photos of your delicious creations to put on our Facebook page.
