You may have noticed that Kaye & David McNaught our Tweed Valley Pecan farmers have been out of stock with their pecans lately but the good news is that they have just started harvesting this year’s crop. Kaye says it’s always exciting this time of the year watching the fruits of a year’s labour work! The pecan trees have thrived on the wet weather, and the nuts are well formed and a little bigger in size than in 2011. However, as farmers, they would now like the wet to cease so that they can run the harvester in the orchard without causing damage in the soft ground! Harvesting in gumboots and raincoats is not recommended apparently! Fresh pecans taste divine…however our market customers will have to wait until Wed April 11th for them to be available, because they need to be dried for 2 weeks, then shelled and packed. On Wed the 11th April Kaye will be on hand to let you crack and taste the pecans as well as talk about the health benefits of nuts. I’m sure Kaye will be providing some wonderful recipes especially the likes of the pecan pie.
Our market is open 7am to 11am every Wednesday at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds via the Harry Williams Gate.”
