Citrus, Citrus and More Citrus ……

Citrus are a dynamo package of health benefits. Whether you’re looking to fight off a cold, get fresh-looking skin, or add more cancer-fighting powers to your diet, citrus can help. You get vitamin C, antioxidants, phytonutrients, minerals, and much more. It is a veritable powerhouse. The Caldera Farmers Market warmly welcomes back Phil Buck of Quarterdeck Citrus with a variety of certified organic citrus produced from his Burringbar farm. Very high quality juicy navel oranges are one of the hardest citrus varieties to grow on the NSW north coast, especially organically but Phil’s family has mastered the art. With years of experience in growing, marketing and value-adding citrus you can expect to find Phil’s stall overflowing with juices all made from organic home-grown fruit.

You just can’t go wrong with citrus. According to Citrus Australia the nutritional and health benefits of Australian oranges are as vast as they are rich in antioxidants that help maintain brain function and keep bones and joints in tip top shape as we age! Oranges are the richest fruit source of the antioxidant hesperedin, which protect cells as we age and, speaking from personal experience, there are many of us who need all the help we can get!
Oranges may also help us reduce the damaging effects of cholesterol and heart disease by protecting the inside of artery walls. So give yourself a boost today and pop down to the markets and experience the many health benefits of Phil’s juicy wonders. His easy-to-peel mandarines and little bites of joy. Be inspired and create a colorful fruit salad with citrus fruits, sweeten up your face with a citrus facial scrub, bake a delicious citrus cake like a luscious lemon cheesecake with a pecan crust, or just eat straight-up as a health-boosting snack. You can’t go wrong with this tangy fruit family.

Citrus tip

To extract the maximum amount of juice from citrus, roll it firmly on thebench before squeezing. If grating, only use the sweetish coloured part of the skin.

Orange and Almond Cake Recipe
If you feel adventurous and want a really quick, easy recipe you might like to try my Orange and Almond Cake! It’s my favourite gluten free cake and in made entirely in a blender! Simply boil two large oranges for about 20 minutes and then blend (yes skin and all) to a smooth consistency. When this is cool simply add 225 grams of coconut sugar, 6 eggs, 185 grams of almond meal and about 50 grams of coconut flour mixed with
one teaspoon of baking powder. Mix well before pouring into a 23cm round cake tin and bake in a moderate oven for 45 -60 minutes. Enjoy with lashings of rich mud cream!
