We have some more exciting news to share with you all this week! As you may have heard, last week the market won an award in the local Tweed Shire Council’s 2023 Tweed Sustainability Awards. We were the winner of the ‘Community Group’ sector, which is a wonderful recognition.
Sustainability is important to the market as its aim is to be as sustainable as possible to ensure that our future generations – so our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can too have access to fresh, local and seasonal produce each and every week. We try our best to do this in many ways but our key ways are…
- in providing farmers and producers with an avenue to sell their local produce – keeping food miles down
- bringing awareness to food security
- implementing a wash station and significantly reducing our weekly waste – less is now going into landfill – thank you to the Market Assistant, Gavin for being relentless in implementing this initiative, you are incredibly appreciated
- Encouraging customers to not only recycle but to reuse (especially the egg cartons at Woodland Valley Farm)
- educating our customers and the younger generations about the importance of locally sourced food
While we were a winner, it was clear from the awards night that we are standing among a community of like minded people, businesses and community / not-for-profit groups. The other nominees and winners showcased how they too are focussing on sustainability for our future. This is truly amazing and the most important take-away from these awards. A massive thank you Tweed Shire Council for holding the awards and for recognising the efforts of our community.
