What’s GOOD at the Market this Week?
Pecan Nuts
This week we are shining the spotlight Tweed River Pecans. David and Kaye first planted their 500 productive pecans in 1999.
They are grown in the fertile soils of the Tweed River Valley at Kynnumboon using biological farming methods.
David and Kaye carefully nurture their trees harvesting and packing the pecan nuts to ensure optimum flavour, freshness and nutrition.
During winter and being deciduous, the pecan trees lose their leaves, resulting in a stunning vista of delicate silvery branches. Organic compost is spread on the orchard floor, clover flourishes and fixes nitrogen in the soil and cattle are grazed to add to the biological life.
Just before spring is a perfect time to prune. One of the photos shows David pruning out parasitic mistletoe 8 metres up from the back of the ute. If left it will weaken the pecan tree.
Spring sees the trees come alive again as buds swell and new foliage shoots out. Male and female flowers appear, with the wind spreading pollen through the trees to enable fertilisation. The growers are busy irrigating and mowing to keep the orchard floor clean. Pecans can be purchased from the Nudgel Nuts Stall at the market each week.
