Sugar cane juice and other cool refreshing drinks

Around the market this weeksugar cane juice

With beautiful spring-like days already here the market offers a wide variety of farm fresh produce at a range of stalls from organic to hydroponic and many in between. The choice is yours. After all that shopping you may be looking for a refreshing drink to quench your thirst. David Hynd is now a regular stallholder with his Grassroots Sugar Cane Juice made from locally grown and harvested sugar cane. The market also offers lemon and lime cooler and a lemon myrtle and sparkling apple juice thirst quencher.

Sugarcane juice is consumed worldwide and is a traditional food with a strong presence in the local cultures where it is grown. Places such as Brazil and India which are significant producers although it is grown in over 100 countries.

Popular at so many markets, David said that sugarcane juice is so much more than just sugar. It is sugar cane pressed in its raw unrefined form providing an abundance of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, chromium, cobalt, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium and zinc.  It also contains iron and vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6. Combined with ginger or lemon it makes an enjoyable and refreshing drink as David’s many regular customers know.

Stallholder Update:

Some stalls are relocating this week so if they aren’t in their usual spot have a good look around. Moving to the grassed area is:

Simply Divine Cupcakes (and croissants etc) – next to the bagel stall

Chai Harem – possibly next to the newly located Simply Divine.

All Natural Meat Company now offer their own farm produced goat’s meat. This very popular meat –the most widely eaten meat in the world – is less well know in Australia. However it is now in high demand and so supplies run low especially at this time of year. If you miss out please let Peter or Lee know and place an order for the next market.10530920_748201308569320_2185722791710658646_n-1

Yogi Nectar will be absent from the market until early September due to family circumstances.

Coming soon:

Soon to arrive – in approximately 4 weeks – will be the very popular blueberries by the punnet of bucketful it is a great choice offered by Blueberry Fields  – a family owned blueberry orchard located in the Byron Bay area. Once they arrive you will see lots of people walking around with white buckets for fresh blueberries. So watch the blackboard at the entry to the market for updates about exactly when they arrive.

Recipe of the week:

Apple and Avocado SalsaIMG_0364

(adapted from the David Herbert’s recipe in The Weekend Australian Magazine April 04-05, 2015)

This is such a deliciously simple recipe using one granny smith apple diced and mixed with 2 diced avocados, 3 spring or ½ red onion finely diced. Mix gently to combine and fold through ½ cup coriander leaves with the juice of a small lime and a sprinkling of chilli or a tiny amount of very finely chopped chilli and season to taste.

Serve with corn chips or vegie sticks accompanied by some Nimbin Valley Dairy Cheeses and delicious Crabbes Woodfired sour dough bread. 11707438_954314917957957_4616466269763542321_n
