Mamey sapote and chimichurri recipe

What’s GREAT at the Market this Week?

This deliciously sweet wonderfully exotic Mamey Sapote is at Jumping Red Ant this week. Being native to Central America and Mexico can be up to 25cm long. Underneath the Mamey’s leathery coarse brown skin is a brilliantly coloured, sweet and creamy flesh. It has an exotic flavour with undertones of almond, chocolate, vanilla and nutmeg with sub-acid undertones of pumpkin, and banana. Inside the large central pit is the fruit’s seed, similar in appearance and flavour to an almond. Although the pit is edible it should NOT be eaten raw.

I tis ready to eat when the flesh gives a little when pressed – some say leave it another day and it will be perfect.

It is wonderful chilled, or mixed into a smoothie, a milkshake or made into ice cream. So try this exotic fruit this week and let is know how you enjoyed it.

Try something new this week and make a 5 minute Chimichurri sauce. With 3 cups of fresh parsley and coriander (Summit Organics and The Gourmet Salad Hut) plus 3 cloves of garlic (Sylva Lining Organics, Summit Organics), approx. 1/4 cup of good olive oil (Spice Palace), 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar plus red pepper (or flakes of), salt and pepper blitzed in a good blender.

While chimichurri makes a great marinade or topping on a meat dish it is also wonderful as a salad dressing or dip.

BACK THIS WEEK: The Cupboard Above the Kettle – Jenny and Albert are back – with Jenny’s healing herbal teas and health advice while Albert offers 10 minute neck and shoulder massages.

Spice Palace is back too – feeling more rested we hope after a brief respite.
