Strawberries, an encore and coming soon – a new stall!

Produce Update:

Strawberries are back in season

Kylie and Steve from Rainbow Fruit Flats have been busy harvesting strawberries for you to enjoy. It seems like only a mere few weeks ago that they were busy planting! They began picking from 2000 plants then this increased to 3000 and finally in full harvest they will have 18000 plants from which to select the tastiest strawberries! So if you love early season strawberries then arrive early so that you don’t miss out!

Broccoli and all the winter brassicas are in full season.

As mentioned on Facebook last Tuesday freshly picked organic broccoli is now available. Broccoli is a cool-weather favourite and reportedly one of the most popular winter vegetables. This is wonderful because it is an excellent source of vitamins A, C and K. It is rich folic acid and contains manganese, calcium and potassium. It is also rich in the plant compounds known as indoles and isothiocynates found to have strong cancer-fighting properties.

Visit market stallholders – Sylva at Sylva Lining or Arvi at the Bio Organic farm for your organic broccoli this week. Des and Donna at Cecil Farm also have broccoli.

What’s New:

Back for an encore – Scott and Kristen from Mayfields Gourmet will be at the market again this week with their delicious Mexican Tortilla GF – (really it is like a Mexican pizza) – an egg coated corn tortilla layered with bean salsa and lightly melted cheese. It also has tomato, capsicum, red onion + guacamole + sour cream + halipino relish if you want the heat (this is optional). See their blackboard for other selections.

Coming soon – Healing Foods Café – a new market stall

Next week Tamar Dubb brings her Healing Foods Café market stall with its strong Mediterranean and Arabic influences using traditional spices with unique flavours.

Tamar – the inspiration behind this stall – said that their food is wholesome, home style cooking using traditional cooking techniques such as fermenting and sprouting grains and pulses, as well as soaking and activating nuts and seeds. These nourishing traditions are rapidly regaining in popularity for their ability to provide maximum nutritional value.

Tamar only uses healthy cooking oils such as home made organic ghee, organic coconut oil and macadamia nut oil sourced from local farmers. These oils are not oxidized into trans fatty acids in the cooking process. She said that they  also use the best quality salt. The only sugar used is organic coconut sugar. Tamar is firmly committed to ensuring that wherever possible fresh produce will be soured at the farmers’ markets or directly from local growers.

Read more next week about Tamar’s winter farmer’s market menu.

Crabbes Creek Wood fired will be BACK this week.

Farmers Choice Organic Seedling – ATTENDING this week.

Entertainment:  Broadfoot

This week we are delighted to welcome Trent Morgan, John Moodie and Russell Kereama playing in the band known as “Broadfoot”. Trent is from Mullumbimby, John is from Lennox Heads and Russell is from Byron Bay. Their bluesy, funky, rocky, soulful fun relaxed music is joyously uncategorisable – or so their website tells us  – so come and listen this week and tell me what you think!

Trent writes much of their music and plays a variety of drums and the harmonica; John Moodie is an instinctive guitarist and Russell is both a musician and visual artist!
