As the season changes …..
Planting is well underway for all the late autumn and winter produce – lots of chard, spinach, kale, broccoi, cabbage and more.
Lettuce will soon be available now the weather has cooled a little; we should see Cos lettuce at the market in the next week or two.
Onions seedlings are being prepared for planting with harvesting commencing in June.
Zucchinis should continue for a little longer.
Macadamia nuts are back – delicious crisp new season macas are hard to resist. I am eating a handful every day and loving it! Nuts ssooo fresh are so enticing.
With tomatoes in a variety of shapes and sizes from organic to conventionally grown there are many flavours to choose from. So while tomatoes and the last of the basil are plentiful consider the many ways to use them. Bruschettas – wonderful with tomatoes, basil, a dash of chilli and red onions – to cooking up a good homemade passata ready for winter warming stockpot and slow cooker meals.
As they are in season these are the foods we naturally should be eating and these little red gems are loaded with vitamin C, betacarotene and lycopene (a vital anti-oxidant) – best absorbed when combined with a good fat such as olive oil or avocado.
If we roll with the rhythmical patterns of foods in season we provide our bodies with the goodness that mother nature intending for that season – it makes perfect sense.
