Peas, capsicum and market food choices

Produce Update:

Wonderful vegies at this time of year with lots of pumpkins, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, kale, coriander and PEAS available at many of the fresh produce farm stalls.

Fresh peas in their pod are already in great supply. When buying peas, look out for bright green, slightly waxy pods that are full but not bulging. Peas that are too big in their pods indicate over mature peas. Always avoid ones that are discoloured, dry, wrinkled or split. Of course because the peas at the market have not travelled far or suffered from being stored it is not likely that you would have to avoid any!

Three pea stirfry01 mainTry the three pea stir fry from the Heart Foundation website but adjust the oil and honey to suit your taste. Summerland Olive oil from Spice Palace would provide a gentle flavour! Don’t forget to bring your own bottles for this oil.  http://www.heartfoundation.org.au/recipes/Pages/pea-stir-fry.aspx Photo is courtesy of the heart Foundation website.

Amazingly the farms that are located in frost free areas are still producing capsicum and tomatoes – generally crops grown in warmer weather or with the help of hot houses such as those at the Bio Organic Farm. The photo below is from Brianna – John’s daughter  taken at Jumping Red Ant’s Bilambil Farm site. image_1

Strawberries are in full season at Rainbow Fruit Flats and surprisingly they still have late season dragon fruit. Look out for custard apples and pawpaw. I have been enjoying the most delicious sweet paw paw purchased last week from Clothiers Creek Fresh Produce.

On Tuesday I will post on Facebook my Chocolate Orange and Almond cake recipe baked this week with oranges from Quarterdeck Organic Citrus.
