What’s GOOD at the Market this Week?
Macadamia Nuts
This week we are shining the spotlight on Nudgel Nuts grown at Ian and Leone’s farm at The Pocket near Billinudgel hence the name. The first trees were planted in 1997, followed in 1998 and 2000 by further plantings, with the most recent being in 2005. Work is never done and although new season nuts arrived at the market late March Ian has been busy. More recently pruning trees to ensure their health and good cropping into the future.
The property covers 200 acres and Ian also runs beef cattle and a herd of elite alpacas.
Ian ensures that his maca trees get the best attention with his focus being on environmentally friendly and sustainable farming and minimum exposure to pesticides and other sprays.
Ian brings a range of macadamia products to the market each week – raw and roasted nuts with or without sea salt (no additives), chocolate coated nuts, honey roasted nuts and macadamia oil. In addition he brings a macadamia spread that is perfect in pestos as are his crushed nuts.
Their roasted nuts are done at a low temperature to ensure that they maintain their inherent goodness.
I love macadamias in a whole host of ways from nibbling them straight from the pack to cooking with them. So to inspire you here is a recipe from the Nudgel Nuts website: http://www.nudgelnuts.com.au/baked-macadamia-crusted-fish/
There are many more recipes too including Macadamia Pancakes and a Macadamia Raspberry Ice Cream Log!
Pick up your fish from Noel at his Brunswick Seed Oysters Seafood stall at the market and enjoy baked macadamia crusted fish this week.
