Lemonade fruit juice and roasted sweet potato chips!

Produce Update:

We are loving our new season citrus.

Last week Phil Buck was juicing lemonade fruit – absolutely delicious! This week try some of his other juices – he has mandarin juice, orange juice and sometimes a mixed citrus juice. For a great immune boost try lemon juice in hot water first thing in the morning and feel the difference!

Don’t forget to  stock up on fresh citrus this week for the pleasure of enjoying their sweetness and to ward off the winter lurgy.

The Hass avocados are simply divine right now. Although they continue to produce through to the end of the year their flavour right now is superb. I am enjoying eating them straight out of natures own bowl – their skin. After cutting a small avocado in half lengthwise I lightly sprinkle it with Himalayan rock salt and lemon juice and scoop the flesh out with a spoon. A great healthy snack and only $3 a bag for the small avocados.

This week Narbey’s Best Avocados will only have green Hass – these only take 2-3 days to ripen. This is because Doug had a nasty fall breaking his leg in three places last week so he has not been able to pick in advance in order to ripen the fruit for this week’s market. Usually he picks about 9 days prior to when ripe fruit are required for the market but this was when he sustained his injury. Next week he will have ripe avocados again as they are being picked now by some friendly helpers.

The Gourmet Salad Hut – out of produce! The frosts have really taken their toll and Rob Andrews said that the growth rate of their usually abundant greens has slowed to the point where they simply do not have anything to offer this week. Hopefully with an extra weeks growth they will be back in stock next week.

Sweet Potatoes – available at many farm stalls now9660249-sweet-potato-with-white-background

When consumed in moderation, sweet potatoes can provide a rich concentration of nutrients. This makes them an ideal addition to your meals especially in the cooler months.

A substantial amount of research has proven that these naturally-sweet root vegetables possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and disease-fighting components.1, 2,

Orange coloured sweet potatoes are particularly high in beta-carotene so they can also contribute to skin health. Vitamin A, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, can help get rid of acne-causing bacteria.

Sprinkle sweet potato sticks with ground sea salt and pepper and then drizzle with a little coconut oil. Roast, turning occasionally for a delightful winter treat.

Other produce:

Eggs are still in short supply and this is likely to continue during the cooler weather.

TTNJ – Persian Koobideh – Pegah and Ben are including Persian Eggs on Pitta this week along with their traditional Koobideh. Their Persian Chai with cardamom – is a simple spiced black tea!

Stall changes this week:

The Gourmet Salad Hut – will be absent this week due to unforeseen frost induced slower growing time.

Farmers Choice Organic Seedling – a fortnightly stall – will NOT be at the market this week.
