Fuerte Avocados and Limes

What’s GREAT at the market NOW?IMG_3381

Jumping Red Ant has the Feurte avocado this week. So great for salads, guacamole and much more! It is a medium-sized, pear-shaped fruit that has a leathery and stays mostly green even after ripening.

New season citrus is gradually becoming available. This week Rainbow Fruit Flats and Jumping Red Ant have limes. This small green fruit is so versatile with its aroma alone having such a strong appeal. PicIMG_3423ked and eaten green or even partially yellow it packs a punch in flavour and nutrition. It is delicious in drinks (including green smoothies), sorbets, zest mixed with butter, zest and juice in raw cakes and tarts, IMG_3377custards and it is simply perfect with vegetables and fish. See the tasty lime and avocado tart recipe below in Recipe of the week .

Autumn brings with it wonderful growing conditions and an increase in fresh vegies evident at the Everest Farm Stall with vibrant orange carrots freshly pulled from the soil, radish and bok choy.

FRESH SEAFOOD has arrived. Noel will only have what has been caught in the days lead ing up to the market so this will vary from week to week in variety and quantity. Noel also offers a seafood chowder for hungry shoppers. So popular was it that it ran out early last week.

Stallholder change:

Apologies – Bagels will not be at the market this due to family illness. Back next week.

Coming soon:

The first week in April will herald the return of Narbey’s Best Avocados with their new season Shepard Avocados.

Citrus arrives in about three weeks. New season organic navels from Quarterdeck Organic Citrus will be the first lot of locally grown citrus to arrive at the market.

Supporting the Community: Men's Shed Bread Boards (1)

Murwillumbah Community Men’s Shed is back with their fortnightly stall selling wonderful camphorlaurel breadboards and platters this week.

Recipe of the week: Lime and avocado Tart

Base: 1 cup almonds   + 1 cup dessicated coconut blended with 5 or 6 medjool dates (seeds removed), 1/2 tsp pure vanilla and about 2 tablespoons of  coconut oil. Vary this to get enough liquid to enable the mix to be blended and clump. Press into a 22cm tart or cake tin and place in the freezer.

Filling: Two avocados blended with the zest and juice of one to two limes and 2 tablespoons of coconut cream or oil. Use more if preferred. Two tablespoons honey.   Blend completely then place this thickish mixture into the chilled tart and sprinkle wth more lime zest or very finely grated dark chocolate.  Chill or freeze and enjoy.
