What’s Good at the Market this Week?
Pink Lady apples have arrived at the TANZO Apple Stall located outside near the Seafood Stall. So pop over and try these amazingly delicious new season apples.
More autumn greens are arriving at the market each week. Leading into winter it is the perfect time to boost your intake of fresh greens to help ward off winter ailments and fennel is one full of good antioxidants and flavour! So along with more citrus arriving soon plus ginger and turmeric still available we have lots of farm fresh vegies and herbs to ENJOY that really help to build our immune system.
Fennel is a flowering plant species in the carrot family believe it or not! It is a hardy, perennial herb with yellow flowers and feathery leaves. It is crunchy and slightly sweet. All foods straight from the earth contain lots of valuable antioxidants and healing phytonutrients and fennel is a great one in this respect. Like many spices, fennel contains a unique combination of phytonutrients—such as flavonoids rutin, quercitin, and various kaempferol glycosides—that give it strong antioxidant activity.
Often known as Florence fennel it has a strong aniseed or licorice flavour and sweet aroma. Served roasted or shaved and eaten raw – it adds a great flavour to a tossed salad. The leaves are wonderful chopped and used in salads, dressings and in green smoothies. It is also delicious fried with onion and served with a cooked meal.
I really enjoy it served in a salad with torn lettuce or rocket, orange segments, avocado, pecan nuts and feta crumbled over the top. Or you might enjoy a prawn and fennel salad with prawns from out seafood stall.
Fennel bulbs are available at the Cecil Farm stall although only in small quantities at the moment but by the middle of May they should be in abundance.
