Fabulous fennel

What’s GREAT This Week

Fabulous fresh fennel with its mild licorice-like flavour has arrived at the market. Whether you enjoy it raw or roasted this crunchy and subtly anise-flavored when raw, and tender and deeply sweet when roasted.

So this week try fennel in a range of recipes from:

  • slivered fennel on avocado toast with crumbled fetta
  • tossed salad with orange segments, avocado and pecans – the perfect combination of seasonal produce
  • sautéed fennel with onions
  • roasted fennel with slow roasted lamb.

Fennel is a flowering plant species in the carrot family believe it or not! It is a hardy, perennial herb with yellow flowers and feathery leaves. It is crunchy and slightly sweet. All foods straight from the earth contain lots of valuable antioxidants and healing phytonutrients and fennel is a great one in this respect. Like many spices, fennel contains a unique combination of phytonutrients—such as flavonoids rutinquercitin, and various kaempferol glycosides—that give it strong antioxidant activity.

Fennel bulbs are available at the Cecil Farm stall.

Also great this week are the new season navel oranges at Quarterdeck Citrus Farm stall (great sliced and served with slivered fennel) and and farm fresh raspberries.

And don’t forget we now how seedlings at the market every week. One Organic Seedlings is you place to find vegies and herbs ready for planting out this week!
