At this time of year we have such a variety of delightfully fresh produce – it just can’t be any fresher as it comes straight from the paddock to you. We are mid season so there is no new produce arriving until blueberries in early September. However this week we are shining the spotlight on the avocado.
Such a versatile fruit there are so many different ways to enjoy an avocado – simply sliced in a salad or with poached eggs for breakfast; mixed into your omelette before cooking or with mashed potatoes for a green potato mash. Avocado also makes a delicious soup and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes.
What about avocado and vegetable rice paper rolls or avocado and cacao ice cream or avocado chocolate mousse cake?

This versatile and delightful fruit (yes it is a fruit) is the Hass (Sharwells at JRA have finished) with its dark green bumpy skin. Best eaten when the skin darkens slightly and the top indents with gentle pressure.
Spring guacamole – my name for a guacamole that you make when coriander is available as it adds such flavour. Finely dice the coriander and mix through your mashed avocado with lime juice and salt and pepper to taste. A variation is to add a little cayenne pepper which gives it a lovely burst of heat.
Avocado is a wonderful addition to so many different smoothies. It gives a beautiful smooth consistency – acting as an emulsifier – when added to a green smoothie. I prefer avocado to fruit in my green smoothies.
It is also a delightful emulsifier in a kefir milk, yoghurt or nut milk smoothie.
For a decadent chocolate smoothie – simply mix a heaped spoonful of raw cacao powder + a teaspoon of honey (or stevia or maple syrup) into a 2 cup milk base of your choice and add the flesh of one avocado and 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence. It is so smooth and delicious. This recipe could also be used substituting fruit for the raw cacao. Have fun experimenting – you simply can’t go wrong as you adjust the ingredients according to each taste test.

Stallholder Update:
Crabbes Creek Woodfired will be at the market this week BUT WITHOUT their pizzas. Apologies from Jon who is unavailable to install the oven and cook.
Nudgel Nuts will be at the market this week but Ian has advised that he will be away on 26th August and 2nd September so stock up this week.
Nuts are loaded with anti-inflammatory fats so – EAT NUTS NOT chips (full of unhealthy saturated fats). Opt for a handful of pecan and/or macadamias every day and feel the difference.
This is the last week for Quarterdeck Citrus. Phil said his citrus are coming to the end of their season.
Blueberries are returning in early September. As soon as Otto from Blueberry Fields gives me a date I will post it.
Yogi Nectar is absent until the end of August as Masa and Edna are in Japan where a close family member is unwell. We wish them all the very best.
