What’s Great at the Market this Week?

We are so lucky in the Tweed that even with cooler nights we still have great produce due to our sunny (well mostly) winter days. And of course some of our produce benefits when the nighttime temperatures drop. So this week we are shining the spotlight on tomatoes – including grappas (mini Romas) too, plus avocados and chicks. All our farm stalls have delicious tomatoes at the moment and with early Hass from Jumping Red Ant we too can enjoy making smashed avocado and tomato on toast with a choice of Gina’s Crabbes Creek Wood Fired organic sourdoughs or Trish’s sliced loaves at her Deli Cafe Market Stall.

It is hatching day today at Woodland Valley Farm here these beautiful new chicks are part of their Heritage Hens program. So we will watch with interest as these littlies grow into productive hens that produce eggs in a range of shades from light brown to blue and olive green. We expect these to arrive at the market in late November.

Jumping Red Ant are experimenting with growing conditions. These yellow grappas are growing in their greenhouse. They also have them growing on the sunny slopes of their Bilambil Heights site. We will enjoy tasting the difference between the tomatoes grown in different conditions as the season progresses.

Only a few more weeks for these juicy delectable finger limes - available at Caldera Honey Stall and so very delicious on yoghurt drizzled with honey.  Also great in drinks of all kinds from sparkling water to cocktails.

Hayden from All Natural Meat Company will be at the market this week. So how about a slow roasted lamb or pork or an Osso Buco. These chilly nights make a warming casserole so appealing.

In the June newsletter from All Natural Meat Co Lee said that “Peter would have wanted us to keep going. Presently we have no intention in changing any of our practices both on the farm or in the market place.
For those who have known Peter for even just a short moment or those that feel like they are close friends or family, please remember his motivation, passion and enthusiasm, take just a little bit of that and add it to your own lives. If you are reading this and have not met Peter, I am sorry.
Peter regarded himself as a humanitarian, he had always said he didn’t want a funeral, therefore we will not be having one.If you feel the need to honour Peter in some way, take a moment to tell someone you care about, how you feel.
