New season Royal Galas back this week.

What’s New this week?

Royal Gala apples –th-2

Simply follow the aroma to find TANZO’s new season apples. YES APPLES THIS WEEK! Tanzo apples Michelle and Rob popped into the market last week and assured me that Gavin will be at the market this week with new season Royal Gala apples! Characterised by a blush of pink on its skin this dense, sweet, juicy apple is the perfect lunch box fruit. So simply and so delicious.

Introduced into Australia from NZ in the early 1980’s, Stanthorpe (where ours are grown) is known for producing the best Royal Gala’s in Australia. http://www.aussieapples.com.au

Michelle also let me know that they will have quinces search-6this week so bring out your quince recipes and enjoy. I know Sarah (from Crumbs and Stuff ) will be stocking up to make her delicious quince paste – just wonderful with cheeses from NVD.

Around the market with our farmers

Our farmers are busy all the year round and I am always keen to provide insight into the diverse production processes for different produce so here is:

Part Two of the Pecan Growing StoryFull size pecans unripe Feb2015

by Kaye McNaught from Tweed River Pecans

The orchard has had a wonderful 6 weeks since the last photo: lots of sunshine and rain has made the nuts grow beautifully. They have now reached full size, and the shell inside the green husk is beginning to harden. If we cut open a nut at this stage, the kernel is pure jelly! However between mid February and harvest time the kernel becomes a firm sweet nut!

A downside of the prolific growth of nuts and leaves this summer is shown in the accompanying photo: the branches are sagging right down to the ground with the weight of the crop. David is pruning judiciously to lighten the load on the branches, without losing too many nuts.

Stallholder changes – Nudgel Nuts – is BACK this week but with a limited range. The good news is the new season macadamias and pecan nuts will soon be harvested.

Crabbes Creek Wood-Fired will have bread only this week. The portable brick oven needs some love and attention so John will be busy restoring it to mint working order – ready for next week.

Mangoes – Everest Farm and Rainbow Fruit Flats have superb mangoes now available at the market. Mangoes picked more recently have a much richer stronger mango flavour and are sweeter than the early season mangoes that we had at the market a few weeks ago. So don’t miss these! search-4
