Leafy greens are the backbone of any alkalising diet and an alkaline body is better at battling bad bacteria, yeast and keeping cravings at bay. Green leafy vegies contain so much goodness that help with improving your cellular health. Think kale, celery, bok choy, silverbeet, baby spinach, parsley …… all and more available at the market now.
In fact – while an apple a day might keep the doctor away it is watercress and broccoli that may increase antioxidants in the blood and lower risk of prostate, colon, and breast cancers. In a petri dish 75% of the cancer cells died within 24 hours.
And while not new this week I let’ s focus on a fruit that is at the market EVERY week of the year. It too offers many health benefits. Self packaged and perfect for lunch boxes – bananas are not just for monkeys – the market offers a variety to select from and this fruit can help alleviate depression (due to high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin — the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter). It is a great prebiotic and helps sooth the digestive system as well as helping with many more health conditions. For more information or inspiration on why to eat a banana today follow this link ..
Fact or fiction? Did you know bananas can cure the itch of a mosquito bite (haven’t tested this one yet) and put a great shine on your shoes.

This week is the last week for Crumbs and Stuff. Sarah and her partner Glen are busily fitting out a place at Tweed Heads where they will open Smith Foods Café and Pantry. So stock up on Sarah’s amazing preserves and conserves this week. And when their new place opens we will let you know so that you can continue supporting Sarah’s creative food adventure.
The weather forecast is for a mostly sunny morning with a 40% chance of showers in the afternoon and evening. A temperature range of 13-26 degrees is perfect for another great market day.
Seasonal fruit or vegie recipe: Gluten free Banana Pancakes
Place 2 ripe bananas, 4 eggs and ¼ cup of coconut flour, 2 tablespoons of butter or coconut oil plus 1 teaspoon of GF baking powder, a pinch of salt and spices to your liking – eg cinnamon or ginger ( or try triple ginger – combine powdered, crystallised and fresh) into a food processor or bowl with a stick blender and whizz until well blended. Cook as you would for normal pancakes.
To use this mix with savoury toppings simply use ripe bananas and delete the spices. If planning a sweet topping such as maple syrup use very ripe bananas for a sweeter mix.
