Turnips: a tasty comforting root vegetable – the turnip – is generally grown as a temperate climate vegetable and used to be the main source of sustenance for the English peasantry before potatoes took on this role. Perhaps this is why it is often referred to as the ‘humble” vegetable.

turnip-garden-17257207Turnips are perfect for soups, pies, for roasting and in stews and casseroles. Larger turnips necessarily develop tougher skins and a stronger flavour, but are great for mashing and or adding to soups and stews. Like most root vegetables, turnips are a great storage vegetable to use when you want to keep eating locally throughout the winter.

Winter turnips have a pungent and peppery flavour and turnip leaves can also be eaten as winter greens resembling mustard greens in flavour. They can also be steamed, stir-fried or grated into salads.

Root vegetables become tender and more deeply flavoured when cooked slowly in a little liquid.

This creamy-white skin with a lovely purple, red or greenish upper part where the taproot has been exposed to sunlight is a member of the cabbage family.

Next week:

  • Come and meet botanical artist and horticulturalist Julia Hancock and hear about her latest project. Last year Julia was in Laos where she learned that a new botanical garden would be opening in Luang Prabang in 2017. More research led to the realisation that establishing the gardens would be beyond the financial means of the Lao government so a request had gone out for funding.

Experts from both the Royal Botanic Garden, UK and the Singapore Botanic Gardens are lending a hand regarding the landscaping and plant selection, but they still need hard cash for the infrastructure.

Julia decided the best way she could help would be to hold a fundraising event here in the Tweed and on Saturday 8 August she will be selling her entire collection of botanical art. All the profits from the sale of her paintings and drawings will go to the gardens, together with the profits from the garage sale that is being held in conjunction with the art show. Find out more about it from Julia when you come to the markets.
