Ian McRae is on the mend after surgery to his broken hip and a week in hospital. He is now home and recovering in the comfort of his own home with all the temptations of farm work calling loudly to him. So although Ian won’t be at the market himself this week – naturally – (keep resting up Ian and please don’t rush back) – his very popular Nudgel Nuts WILL BE. YEAH 👏 👏👏
You will find them on a table in their regular spot being looked after by Rob and Ocean from Spice Palace market stall and Gav and I when we can slip in there and help out.
All our farmers are great!
Last week I mentioned that I usually feature produce that is great each week in this section but during our 9th birthday month I’m focussing on some of what our farmers do as it is so significant.
This week let’s take a peak at Jumping Red Ant. Established now for close to 20 years John and his family have gradually expanded their lines of production from avocados grown on their Duranbah Farm to a huge variety of fruit, vegies and flowers.
Growing flowers is Kath’s passion – from roses, gerberas, lisianthus, foxgloves, dahlias and proteas – there are always beautiful flowers at the market for us to enjoy or give and with Mother’s Day not too far away they have beautiful roses in season right now.
Brianna – their daughter is also very involved in all aspects of the farm and with the addition of more greenhouses they have continued to expand their crop diversity. It is wonderful to see the younger generation coming back to our local farms and this is the case for four of our market’s farm stalls …. so far.
John and Brianna now farm a number of sites enabling them to produce a consistent range of vegies throughout the year. Their Bilambil Heights site produces everything from capsicum, tomatoes, zucchini, beans, and eggplants to passionfruit and more. The sunny north-east facing slope supports a vastly longer growing season for many of these vegies than other places around the Tweed. So JRA is able to produce these almost the whole year round.
