Mamey sapotes – exotic tropical fruit

What’s NEW This Week?

Sapote – this week Jumping Red Ant will have Mamey Sapotes. This very sweet tropical fruit – native to Central America and Mexico it can be up to 25cm long. It has a rough and leathery-woody looking skin hiding a deep orange to salmon pink creamy sweet flesh. This creamy fruit has an exotic flavour with notes of baking spices such as vanilla and nutmeg with undertones of pumpkin, banana, pear and apricot. Inside the large central pit is the fruit’s seed, similar in appearance and flavor to an almond. Although the pit is edible it should NOT be eaten raw. Note – the seed is inside the pit!

It is wonderful chilled, or mixed into a smoothie, a milkshake or made into ice cream. So try this exotic fruit this week and let is know how you enjoyed it.

Still GREAT this week are mangoes – Valencia Pride, Bowen’s, R2E2, Kensington Prides, Sensations and some Namdoc Mia Thai green mangoes at the Everest Farm stall.

Costanzo grapes still haven’t been harvested so hopefully next week we will have their popular black muscats. But their new season Royal galas are here so enjoy these.

There are always lots for summer vegies to enjoy a salad this week with the crunch of a Lebanese cucumber or diced zucchini soaked on Byron Bay Gourmet balsamic vinegar as demonstrated by chef Louise Miller last week.

Thanks to The Family Centre’s volunteer Amanda we will have a regular kiddies spot every week. Amanda is providing an activity every week for Mum’s and Dad’s or grandparents to enjoy wit the littlies. Please know that this is not a child minding service it is a family activity.
