Carrots with their tops on!

What’s GREAT This Week?

Beautiful young carrots with their tops intact are available from EVEREST FARM, CECIL FARM and SYLVA LINING ORGANICS. Look for their bright green carrot tops with lovely long roots pulled straight from the ground and washed clean for you to enjoy. Other root vegetables in abundance too are beetroot, parsnip and coming soon to CECIL FARM is celery. There is also an abundance of leafy greens.

Did you know that carrot tops are nutritious edible greens that have been popping up on restaurant menus and food blogs? They are great in green smoothies and are delicious made into a pesto. How about a carrot top and cashew pesto or a carrot top and macadamia pesto? YUM! You could also try frying them with butter and garlic or if you prefer blanche them first and then fry.

While they do contain alkaloids and nitrates—which some people can be sensitive to this is similar in the same sense that some people are sensitive to nightshades! According to http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/carrotops.html carrot greens aren’t toxic unless you eat them by the bucket load. People generally know their sensitivities so can make decisions accordingly.

Storage tip: – to store for a short time cut the tops off with about 1 cm of carrot. This prevents the tops from drawing the moisture out of your carrots. However the green tops are generally best used within a day or two as they don’t generally store well.

Fresh pork is available every week along with other meats butchered on the Tuesday before market day.  ALL NATURAL MEAT CO raises their pigs free range happy pigs at  their Doon Doon farm.
