What’s GREAT at the Market this Week?

Eating with the seasons means that we can really celebrate when one of our favourite fruits or vegies returns so this week let’s celebrate as ………..

AVOCADOS are back! The coastal Fuertes tend to come in a little ahead of those on the Burringbar Range. So this week Jumping Red Ant has Fuertes and NEXT week we will welcome back Doug and Blanche Narbey with their Fuertes too. As specialty growers the Fuerte is the first of the range of avocado varieties that they bring to the market over many months.

One of my favourites – this pear shaped small to medium sized fruit is thin skinned – so Fuertes don’t travel well making them more suited to a farmers’ market. Lucky us! But with their rich nutty flavour and creamy flesh they have a high oil content for avocados and that is probably why they are one of my personal favourites. But I am an avocado lover so I enjoy them all!!

BASIL has been a little scarce this year as some growers have experienced problems with disease. However The Gourmet Salad Hut has beautiful looking basil right now. So if you love your basil, pesto and more then you will be able to pick up basil this week.

Storage tip: Basil doesn’t like being refrigerated so use it soon after purchasing or picking. However to keep basil fresh, trim the stems and place them in a glass or jar of water, just like cut flowers. Loosely cover it and leave it on the counter. Although certain herbs, such as parsley and coriander can be stored this way in the fridge, basil does better at room temperature.

Welcome back: Belles Kitchen – this week Belinda is back with her beautiful artisan products. If you haven’t tried her muesli it is a must – take some home this week and/or enjoy a Belles Kitchen Brekkie bowl. Made using farm fresh fruit, artisan yoghurt or coconut cream and topped with her delicious muesli no wonder people are loving it.

 

Also we welcome back the Murwillumbah Mens’ Shed this week. They are bringing their beautiful camphor laurel breadboards and other creations.

Seasonal produce forecast return dates: Pecan nuts will return in April; Blueberry Fields will be back late May or early June.

Absent this week:

  • The Cupboard Above the Kettle – however the bonus is that NEXT week Jenny is holding the first of her monthly market talks. A trained naturopath Jenny’s first talk will focus on women’s health and its title is From Hormonal Havoc to Happiness.

?Weather: A partly cloudy day but hopefully like last week we will see lots of sun. The daytime temperature will reach the high 20s and maybe 30 degrees so a little more “summer” yet.
